Southwark was originally laid out in 1881 as Section 1 of the Hundred of Adelaide, making it the first organised expansion beyond the city's initial boundaries. Home to Colonel Light’s ‘Theberton’ Cottage, over time Southwark became known as Thebarton. Today, the name Southwark is being reinstated to reflect and honour the original legacy of the suburb.
