A NAME RESTORED, A FUTURE REIMAGINED

As we look ahead to what Southwark Grounds will become, we're also looking back – with purpose.

Southwark was first laid out in 1881 as the first organised expansion beyond the city's initial boundaries, and was home to Colonel Light's own cottage. Over time, the area became known as Thebarton.

Now, following community consultation, the name Southwark returns to the map, reinstating a piece of our city's early story.

A NEW SUBURB

SOUTHWARK BOUNDARIES FINALISED

The newly defined suburb spans just over 26 hectares, including Southwark Grounds. It's bordered by Karrawirra Parri / River Torrens to the north, Port Road to the east, Light Terrace to the south, and Cawthorne Street to the west. By community request, it also includes selected properties between Stirling and Anderson Streets.

BE PART OF WHAT'S NEXT

In April 2025, Renewal SA went to market seeking development partners to bring the future of Southwark Grounds to life.

As a subscriber, you'll be among the first to hear project updates – including the outcome of the partner selection process, future townhouse and apartment releases, and how you can be a part of it.

We're excited to take you on the journey as this new community takes shape.
